 Definitions
Translation:
Translation is the transfer of one written language into another written language. Professional translations transfer the linguistic form of the source text without changing the meaning, register or nuances of the source language. In translation, all meaning is conserved, without additions or omissions.
Simultaneous Interpretation:
Simultaneous Interpretation is the oral translation of a speaker’s words into another language while the speaker is speaking. In simultaneous mode, the interpreter sits in a booth with a clear view of the speaker and listens to and simultaneously interprets the speech into the target language. Simultaneous interpretation is most often used for formal conferences and business meetings.
Consecutive Interpretation:
When providing consecutive interpretation, the interpreter sits at the same table with the delegates or at the speaker's podium and interprets a speech into the target language after the speaker speaks. The professional consecutive interpreter uses a specialized note-taking system and will pause to interpret the speaker at appropriate intervals (varying from a few seconds to after several minutes of speech). Consecutive interpretation is more formal than escort
interpretation and is often used for formal business meetings, depositions and negotiations.
Escort Interpretation:
Escort Interpretation is the oral translation between two languages during informal conversations between two or more people. This technique is most often used during site visits and social events. Escort interpretation is a less formal form of consecutive interpretation.
Consultant Interpreting:
The Consultant Interpreter works with conference organizers or direct clients to assemble a full-service team of interpreters to cover a multilingual event. The Consultant Interpreter also often arranges interpreting equipment rental for the event.
Sight Translation:
Sight Translation is the simultaneous, oral translation of a written text. A specialized skill, sight translation is most often used when the gist of a letter or document needs to be determined with urgency. Clients often may have several documents sight translated in whole or in part to determine which sections require a full translation the traditional sense.
